One of the best-known studies reviewed trichograms from 823 women over a six-year period. Researchers found annual periodicity in hair growth and shedding, with the maximum proportion of telogen hairs occurring during summer and the lowest telogen rates in late winter. The study was published in Dermatology .

That distinction matters. The phrase fall shedding makes it sound as though autumn itself flips a switch. The underlying pattern may actually begin earlier in the seasonal cycle and become more visible later when resting hairs reach the release stage.

Translation: the leaves may be falling. Your entire hairline did not receive the same memo. Seasonal patterns can exist without every noticeable increase in shedding being automatically “normal fall hair loss.”

What Is Happening Inside the Hair-Growth Cycle?

Hair follicles do not all grow and shed at once. Each follicle operates on its own timetable, cycling through periods of active growth, transition, rest and eventual release. That staggered timing is one reason a healthy scalp can contain hairs in several different phases at the same moment.

Why Can Shedding Become More Noticeable Around Late Summer and Fall?

The exact biological reason for seasonal hair cycling in humans is not completely settled. A separate year-long study involving 41 Chinese volunteers also found an increased rate of telogen hairs around August and September. So the scientifically safer way to say it is: some people may experience a seasonally influenced shift in hair cycling that becomes noticeable around the late-summer-to-fall transition. That is very different from claiming everyone should expect a dramatic autumn shed.

What Does the Research Actually Show?

How Can You Tell Hair Shedding From Hair Breakage?

This is one of the most important distinctions in the entire article. Shedding happens at the follicle; breakage happens along the fiber.

A naturally shed hair is typically an intact strand released after progressing through its follicular cycle. A broken hair, in contrast, has snapped somewhere between the scalp and the end.
