But this finding needs context. It does not prove that every person's hair continues deteriorating for exactly seven days, that all hair colors behave identically, or that freshly colored hair is secretly falling apart while you sleep. The reported effect was especially evident in the black-hair model tresses studied, while Kao reported that its white-hair model tresses did not show the same Day 7 bond-cleavage pattern.

In other words: the salon appointment may be finished, but the chemistry deserves a longer conversation. Your hair can still look glossy, dimensional, and absolutely fabulous while the processed fiber carries structural changes that are invisible in the mirror.

And that is exactly why the first week after coloring is more interesting than the usual advice to simply “use a color-safe shampoo.”

What did researchers actually find by Day 7?

Kao created black-hair model tresses approximately 15–20 centimeters long, treated them with a common oxidative hair colorant, and examined the internal condition immediately after coloring and again seven days later.

The researchers used a fluorescent technique in which a reagent reacts with SH groups—chemical groups generated when SS bonds are cleaved. According to Kao's report, fluorescence inside the black-hair samples was considerably stronger on Day 7, which the researchers interpreted as evidence that SS-bond cleavage had continued after coloring.

Evidence point #1: The black-hair model tresses measured approximately 15–20 cm and were compared immediately after oxidative coloring and seven days later.

Evidence point #2: Stronger fluorescence associated with SH groups was observed within the black hair on Day 7.

Evidence point #3: Kao reported that white-hair model tresses did not show the same SS-bond-cleavage finding on Day 7, suggesting a possible role for melanin.

A surprisingly interesting clue

Why might melanin matter after oxidative hair coloring?

Melanin is the pigment system responsible for much of natural hair color, and oxidative coloring intentionally interacts with that pigment environment.

Kao's researchers proposed that melanin-related radicals may contribute to the continued SS-bond cleavage they observed after coloring. Their reasoning came partly from the contrast between the black-hair and white-hair model tresses: the reported Day 7 phenomenon appeared in melanin-rich black hair but was not observed in the white-hair model.

That is scientifically interesting. It is also where we need to resist the beauty industry's favorite hobby: taking one intriguing finding and stretching it into a universal law before the research has had time to finish its coffee.

“Melanin may be involved” is an important research clue. It is not the same sentence as “this happens identically to everybody.”

Read the science, not the headline alone

Does the seven-day finding apply to every person who colors their hair?

No. The study does not establish that every person's hair experiences exactly seven days of continuing structural deterioration after every color service.

The model-tress experiments were highly specific. Kao also reported a small follow-up evaluation involving three women with black hair when testing its post-color technology. That is useful exploratory evidence, but it is not a large, diverse clinical population from which we can declare a universal seven-day rule.
